They are back in London for Christmas! To this young girl, there's nothing more exciting than this. It doesn't matter if the Fosters are going to spend most of the time here in the opera house, it doesn't matter that this probably means they won't be able to have a proper family dinner due to the tight schedule between rehearsal and Christmas night's performance. They are in London for Christmas, which means the beautiful lights, bustling streets, Christmas carols blaring from speakers around the streets, sparkling window displays lining both sides of the streets day and night.
And most of all, the feeling of warmth in the air, despite the fact that they are in the deepest cold of winter. The feeling is what makes Christmas the most magical day of the year.
The opera house was bustling with activities that fine morning, 3 days before Christmas. The Fosters came to the Opera house early so that both parents could get ready for work while the children, Lorraine at 7 and Kit at 4, were left to their own devices. Excited, Lorraine led her little brother through the maze of people in the opera house, excited to check everything out, the venue, the costumes, all the famous opera singers!
Waving in and out of the crowd is easy for both children's tiny figures, although having longer legs, Lorraine could cover the ground quicker than her little brother. "Hurry Kit! Or I'm leaving you behind!" she called back. A string of protests came back to meet her, she soon found Kit's small hands sliding into hers. Tightening her grip, Lorraine pulled her brother along towards the seating hall, she always loves to see the opera stage from the audience's perspective.
Turning a corner, she found herself smacking face first into a solid body. A reflective reaction, the young girl let go of her brother's hand to stop herself from falling, instead, she found herself pushing the other boy down with her as her inertia pushed her forward. "Oh my stars! I am so sorry! I am so sorry!" panicked, Lorraine apologised repeatedly, what if she hurt someone. Maybe she should've listened to her parents' advice and stopped running around the opera house, then again, she was sure that she'd repeat the same mistake the next time she's excited about something.
Looking up, she found a pair of warmest brown eyes staring back at her, her eyes widened, "I am so sorry! Are you okay?" she apologised once more, her face a shade of concerns and fears. What if he's a famous actor and she hurt him and he couldn't perform during Christmas? What if he tells her parents? What if his parents quarrel with her parents? Dad has a rather hot temper and Lorraine hates it when someone else pisses him off cause he would be fuming the rest of the day after. The girl gulped, not even hiding her obvious panic now.
His face though, softened into a smile - and what a beautiful smile it is, so warm and genuine. Lorraine blinked twice, feeling her breath get caught. "I’m okay, are you?" he responded calmly, while Lorraine could just nod her head in reply, pigtails bouncing up and down with the movement of her head.
"I am so sorry!" she couldn't think of anything else to say but apologies, a frown pulling the corners of her lips downwards, "Please don't tell my mom and dad, please? They'll get so mad!" She begged, pleading in her eyes.
"I won't," somehow, that promise calmed her down, she doesn't know why or how. It could've been the earnest look in his eyes, or his reassuring smile, Lorraine knew that he meant what he said, he won't tell her parents.
"Thank you, and I am sorry, once again," she said, clambering to her feet. She looked over to Kit next to make sure her little brother wasn't injured in the tiny accident as well; thank the stars no harm seems to have come to him. Habitually, she smoothed her brother's hair lovingly, before turning back to the other boy, "By the way, I am Lorraine and this is Kit, my little brother. You are?" she asked, tilting her head to one side, happy to see someone her age in the opera house. She never really has anyone to play with. Even though her little brother is good company at times, Kit is a little too young to understand half the things she is interested in or doing.
His name is Harrison, he told her, the same heart-warming smiles on his face as he did. Lorraine smiled back. Little did she know then that the boy she's looking at would be growing up into a world-famous actor (she did suspect back then, as she was looking at the handsome young boy standing before herself), or the fact that he'll someday becomes the love of her life, bringing her joy and happiness (and confusion and heartache) like no one ever does.
